Vivo managed to grab attention at the recently-concluded MWC 2018 with the unveiling of its futuristic-looking APEX concept smartphone. At the time of unveiling, it was believed that the device was pretty much a concept and will not see light of day anytime soon. However, Vivo has gone ahead and officially announced the smartphone at an event held in China today. The highlight of the device is the unique front camera and truly bezel-less fascia. Also, the company has offered its unique under-display fingerprint scanning technology with the new handset.
The Vivo APEX is a futuristic looking device and offers a 5.99-inch OLED display with an impressive body to screen ratio of 91 percent. The phone’s top and side bezels are just 1.8mm thin, while the bottom bezel measures 4.3mm. Vivo has managed to achieve this feat by placing the ambient and proximity sensors as well as the fingerprint scanner under the display. Speaking of the fingerprint scanner, Vivo has equipped the APEX with what it calls Half-Screen Fingerprint Scanning Technology, which uses the entire bottom half of the display as fingerprint scanner and also supports multi-fingerprint recognition. The screen also doubles up as the earpiece and loudspeaker since both are placed beneath the panel.
Moving on to the core specs, while Vivo has not revealed much, it has confirmed that the APEX will be powered by the top-tier Snapdragon 845 chipset. Other details of the phone including storage, RAM, and primary camera specs are unknown at this point. Coming to the second highlight of the smartphone, the 8MP selfie camera is placed on top and is retractable, which means it pops up like a periscope when needed. Vivo has claimed that it takes the front camera only 0.8 seconds to pop up. The dual camera on the APEX comes with support for Super HDR and an advanced AI algorithm. For audiophiles, the smartphone comes with Hi-Fi audio experience, three amplifiers, and DAC.
Vivo has revealed that the device will go into mass production starting mid-2018. Apart from this, no other details are known including the price, colour options, and the availability. We will bring you more updates whenever the brand discloses them, so stay tuned.
