Ask anyone how they like their pizza and you are bound to run into a division of opinion. While some swear by the variety dished out by popular fast food chains, others favour wood-fired, thin crust preparations topped with artisan cheese and exotic toppings. The establishments serving pizza also make lofty claims about originality and the search for the perfect pizza goes on.
The latest entrant in the quest for the said pizza is The Pizza Bakery on Indiranagar’s 12th Main Road. The establishment has a nice, airy ambience bolstered by peppy music; and is a kind of place you can kick start a weekend with friends or bring a date to impress with your knowledge of beer. There is plenty of scope for the latter at The Pizza Bakery, as the bar offers German and Belgian craft beers on tap. The very German Weiss Guy is a good start, with its light flavour infused with a dash of banana and clove. For a different taste, we recommend taking a cue from the Belgians and trying the Saint Martin Abbey Dark, frothy and fun.
The food menu is balanced enough that vegetarians will find some options with popular salads like the insalata caprese and starter options ranging from stuffed pasta made with sun-dried tomatoes and goat cheese to a Beiruti Hummus. We were recommended the stuffed garlic bread and it turned out to be with good reason. The cheesy delight, that is garlic bread, is topped off with a half each of buffalo mozzarella and caramelized onions with some pepperoni slices to add some zing, though you can also opt for olives or skip the extras altogether. The soft mouthfuls of bread melt away in the mouth quickly and had us reaching for more.
Vegetarian pizza options include the classic margherita, along with chef recommendations like Popo’s Veggie Delight, a mix of zucchini, roast pepper, sun dried tomatoes, olives, jalapeno and more. We went all out with Pig Out, another chef special, that mixes barbecued pork belly with pepperoni and bacon, with caramelized onions joining in again for the fun. As one might expect, this is a delightful (and extremely filling) experience, which can be further enhanced by opting to have a sunny side egg or mozzarella ball placed in the middle of the pizza at extra cost. We tried the flambé experience however, where flaming dark rum is poured over half the pizza for a visual experience that adds to the flavour. This is not the rigid thin crust variety some may be used to however, so be prepared for some hand gymnastics to manipulate the slices.
