On 27 September 1988, the National League for Democracy was founded under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi. The party was formed in the wake of the 8888 Uprising in Burma against totalitarian rule. The uprisings took place in 1988 in favor of democracy, and was ended with a military coup. A year layer, Suu Kyi was put under house arrest for 16 years.
