A recent study conducted in mice found that offspring born to mice that exercised were less likely to become obese after consuming a high-fat diet later in life. The new findings were presented at the 2019 Experimental Biology meeting.
Although previous studies have shown that exercise by obese females benefits their offspring, this is the first research to demonstrate that the same is true when non-obese females exercise.
“Based on our findings, we recommend that women, whether or not they are obese or have diabetes, exercise regularly during pregnancy because it benefits their children’s metabolic health,” said Jun Seok Son, who conducted the study.
The researchers examined the offspring of mice that performed 60 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every morning during pregnancy. Offspring born to mice that didn’t exercise were used as a control group.
At weaning, the offspring of the exercising mice showed increased levels of proteins associated with brown adipose tissue compared to the control group. This type of tissue converts fat and sugar into heat.
The researchers also observed higher body temperatures in the exercise group, indicating that their brown adipose tissue was more efficient or had a higher thermogenic function which has been shown to prevent obesity and metabolic problems.
After weaning, the offspring followed a high-fat diet for eight weeks. The mice in the exercise group not only gained less weight on the high-fat diet but also showed fewer symptoms of metabolic diseases such as diabetes and fatty liver disease.
“Our data suggest that the lack of exercise in healthy women during pregnancy can predispose their children to obesity and associated metabolic diseases partially through impairing thermogenic function,” said Son.

President Donald Trump’s tax returns will never be handed over to Democratic lawmakers, White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said on Sunday, defying an effort in Congress to learn more about the real estate mogul’s personal finances.
Asked on “Fox News Sunday” if congressional Democrats will succeed in obtaining the Republican president’s tax returns, Mulvaney said: “No, never. Nor should they.”
He dismissed an effort to obtain the returns, launched on Wednesday by US House of Representatives tax committee Chairman Richard Neal, as a political ploy from Democrats who will never stop attacking Trump.
“Democrats are demanding that the IRS turn over the documents. That is not going to happen, and they know it. This is a political stunt,” Mulvaney said.
Democrats countered that Neal’s request to the Treasury Department for Trump’s returns is grounded in law and a needed inquiry, given Trump’s refusal to disclose his tax records and to divest himself of his business interests.
“This is a legitimate authority that the Congress has. This president, by the way, is the least transparent president that we’ve had in half a century,” Democratic Representative Dan Kildee, a tax committee member, told ABC’s “This Week.”
Democratic Representative Ben Ray Lujan noted that presidents for decades have voluntarily released their income tax returns. “This is not political, as our Republican colleagues are making it out to be,” he told “Fox News Sunday.”
An attorney for Trump on Friday blasted House Democrats’ request for six years of Trump’s personal and business returns as “a misguided attempt” to politicize the tax laws, accusing lawmakers of harassment and interference in IRS audits.
In a statement that mapped out the legal battlefield ahead, Trump lawyer William Consovoy said the request filed by Neal flouts “constitutional constraints.”
Republican Senator Mitt Romney urged Trump to release his tax returns as promised but criticized Democratic efforts to force the issue through legislative action as “moronic.”
“The courts are not going to say that you can compel a person running for office to release their tax returns,” he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
One of many investigations targeting Trump on Capitol Hill and in the US court system, the House Democrats’ probe into the president’s tax returns could pull back the curtain on his business empire and his reputation as a dealmaker.
As a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump broke with a decades-old practice of making his tax returns public and continues to refuse to release them as president, while retaining ownership in many enterprises, ranging from golf courses and hotels and other properties.
If Congress takes the administration to court over Trump’s taxes then little case law would be available to help guide judges, legal experts said, both because the statute cited by Neal to obtain the returns has hardly ever been contested, and because most document disputes between the legislative and executive branches of government are resolved by negotiation.
The losing party could appeal, ultimately to the US Supreme Court. If litigation extends into 2021, a judge could also force a newly elected Congress to start the process over, said Ross Garber, an attorney who specializes in political investigations.

BJP leader Varun Gandhi on Sunday heaped praises on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that no Prime Minister brought glory to India like Modi, including those belonging to his family.
Addressing a public gathering, Varun, who is also the grandson of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, said, “Vajpayee ji was from a normal family but had never seen abject poverty. Modi ji is from an economically weaker family. Honestly speaking, some people of my family have also been Prime Minister but the honor that Prime Minister Modi has brought to the country hasn’t been seen in long past.”
He also said Prime Minister Modi is living for the country and would die for it as well as he has no other agenda.
“In five years, Prime Minister Modi has not a single accusation of corruption. There are no corruption charges on him. For whom would he do corruption when he has no one else in his family? This person is only living for the country and would die for the country. He is only worried about the country,” he said.
Varun, who is an incumbent MP from Sultanpur constituency, is contesting the impending Lok Sabha polls from Pilibhit constituency, a seat which was long held by his mother Maneka.
Pilibhit will be going to polls in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 23. Counting of votes will take place on May 23.
While Varun is contesting from his mother’s earlier constituency, Maneka will be contesting from her son’s earlier constituency, Sultanpur.

India on Sunday rejected as “irresponsible” and “preposterous” Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s claim that India was planning to carry out another attack on Pakistan, saying his comments were aimed at whipping up war hysteria in the region.
Qureshi told reporters in Multan that Pakistan has “reliable intelligence” that India was planning to attack Pakistan again between April 16 and 20, adding five permanent members of the UN Security Council were apprised about it. In a strongly worded statement, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Ravesh Kumar called Qureshi’s comments a “public gimmick” appearing to be “a call to Pakistan-based terrorists to undertake a terror attack in India”.
“India rejects the irresponsible and preposterous statement by the foreign minister of Pakistan with a clear objective of whipping up war hysteria in the region. This public gimmick appears to be a call to Pakistan-based terrorists to undertake a terror attack in India,” Kumar said. He said India reserves the right to respond “firmly and decisively” to any cross-border terrorist attack.
In Islamabad, the Indian Deputy High Commissioner was summoned to Pakistan Foreign office and he was issued a warning against “any misadventure” by India. The claim by Qureshi came nearly six weeks after India struck the biggest terrorist training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed deep inside Pakistan in retaliation to the dastardly Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed. The JeM had claimed responsibility for the attack.
On February 27, the Pakistan Air Force retaliated by unsuccessfully targeting several military installations in Jammu and Kashmir. In the dogfight, Pakistan downed a MiG-21 Bison jet and captured an IAF pilot, who was handed over to India on March 1. India had shot down a Pakistani F-16 but Islamabad has been denying that it lost any jet in the aerial combat. Kumar said it has been made clear to Pakistan that it cannot absolve itself of the responsibility of a cross-border terrorist attack in India. “No attempt at creating an alibi for its complicity in such attacks will succeed. Pakistan needs to take credible and irreversible steps against terrorism operating from all territories under its control rather than making hysterical statements to obfuscate the core issue that bedevils our region: cross-border terrorism,” he said.
Sources said the Indian deputy high commissioner clearly conveyed to Pakistan foreign office about India’s position on Pak-sponsored terror, asserting that Islamabad must take concrete action against terror groups based in that country. The MEA spokesperson said Pakistan has been advised to use established diplomatic and DGMO (Director General of Military Operations) channels to share any actionable and credible intelligence it has about imminent terror attacks.
Earlier in the day, Qureshi told a press conference in his home town of Multan that India is devising a new plan to attack Pakistan. “A new mishap could be staged…And its purpose will be to justify their (India’s) offensive against Pakistan and to increase diplomatic pressure against Islamabad,” he alleged.
“If it happens, you can imagine the impact of the occurrence on the peace and stability of the region. According to our information, the action could be taken between 16-20 April,” Qureshi said. He further said, “We want the international community to take notice of this irresponsible behaviour and reprimand them [India] for taking this route.”
The tension between the two countries triggered by the Pulwama strike appeared to have eased slightly in the last couple of weeks. Pakistan on Friday announced that it will release 360 Indian prisoners, mostly fishermen as a “goodwill gesture”. The two countries held a meeting relating to the Kartarpur corridor last month.
