If you are after your child’s life for scoring low in his maths test while you
yourself got golden zeros in school, stop what you are doing and read
this.
According to a research published in npj Science of Learning by
researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and King’s College
London, genes account for around 60 percent of educational
achievement of the child. Yes, beat that.
Surprisingly, for many years researches have linked the academic success
of students to his/her health, happiness and other such factors affecting
their life.
Interestingly, while examining the test scores of around 6,000 pairs of twins–right from primary school to end of the education–
it was found that the influence of genes on academic success of students was that those who started off well in primary school
continued to do well until graduation.
According to Margherita Malanchini, a psychology postdoctoral fellow at the Population Research Center at UT Austin, “Around
two-thirds of individual differences in school achievement are explained by differences in children’s DNA, but less is known
about how these factors contribute to an individual’s academic success over time.”

The researchers also found that genetic factors explained 70 percent stability of academic success that lasted the whole
school life.
We hope this study changes the way parents perceive and react to, their children’s scores and stop nitpicking about their
marks.
It is also advised to not hover around and let them study the way they want to without weighing them down with the burden of
your expectations.
So, the next time you find yourself chastising your kid for scoring less than what you expected out of him/her, pause and think if
you are to be blamed for the same.
