Priyanka Chopra has been facing a lot of flak for an episode of an American TV series Quantico involving a Hindu terror plot. Bollywood actors Varun Dhawan and Ayushman Khurrana have now spoken up about the controversy at a press conference of the International Indian Film and Academy (IIFA) on 13 June.
Ayushman said, “When you play a character, you have your own thoughts and that can’t be right or wrong. You’re following a script, a director and that’s your first responsibility. There are all kinds of opinions, you will get backlash when you take one side. You can’t escape this”.
Varun Dhawan then continued, “To end it, Priyanka Chopra has made the entire country very proud and we stand by her. There’s nothing else.”
Previously, Priyanka Chopra took to Twitter and apologised for hurting people’s sentiments. She wrote, “I’m extremely saddened and sorry that some sentiments have been hurt by a recent episode of ‘Quantico’. That was not and would never be my intention. I sincerely apologise. I’m a proud Indian and that will never change.”
In the episode, Priyanka Chopra, who plays Alex Parrish, is an anti-terrorism squad officer who unearths a conspiracy hatched by the terrorists planning a nuclear attack in Manhattan to frame Pakistan days before a scheduled India-Pakistan summit. The episode drew intense criticism from Indian fans.
