Before the wide-eyed fans, who were in a state of awe, could capture the adorable surprise, Kidman reminded them that she’d still not got her hair and makeup done.
Just a few hours later, she stunned on the red carpet in a blue strapless gown. She presented the Original Screenplay award at the Academy Awards 2018.

This designer’s collection is inspired by Germany’s Angela Merkel
Angela Merkel’s very particular sense of style got some major catwalk cred Sunday on the day the German chancellor was guaranteed her fourth term in office. Fashion’s hottest designer Demna Gvasalia sent out more than a dozen jackets and coats with Merkel hips in his Paris fashion week show for Balenciaga. The Georgian-born wunderkind, who grew up as a refugee in Germany after fleeing his war-torn homeland, channelled the prudent bourgeois hausfrau look so beloved of the German leader.
One orange houndstooth coat, worn with a tight 1950s-style scarf, would have particularly pleased the thrifty Swabian housewives whose fiscal rectitude Merkel is so fond of quoting. The designer price tag, however, might make them blanch. Gvasalia — the hippest creator in the world right now for his designs for Balenciaga and his own Vetements label — has not officially acknowledged the chancellor as his muse.
Stasi meets hausfrau
But two stern suits in his autumn-winter collection last year also had Merkelesque attributes, although they conjured up more the Stasi secret police of her youth in the old East Germany than the chancellor herself. Sam Hine, of US GQ magazine, tweeted at the time that the “last pillar of liberal democracy in Europe” was now Balenciaga’s inspiration — though doubted the link. Now there is little doubt.
Prada impresses with a collection of bold lines and colours
With Milan at her feet, designer Miuccia Prada unveiled her fluorescent and urban chic fall-winter collection on Thursday, in a high rise building towering over Italy’s fashion capital.
Prada, who is also co-chief executive of the eponymous luxury group, used Milan Fashion Week to continue her exploration of different facets of femininity, with designs that stood out with their bold colours and stark lines.
Clad in fluorescent pink, orange and green, Prada models danced on a shiny black floor to the rhythm of Blondie. Neon light installations of monkeys, dinosaurs, bananas and aliens playfully displayed outside the building could be seen from the floor to ceiling windows.
Prada hosted the show in the “Torre” building, a modern tower which will be the latest addition to the group’s “Fondazione Prada” art foundation project. The existing Fondazione buildings, once a gin distillery, were turned in the early 1990s into a space dedicated to contemporary art and culture.
“I wanted to have a little revenge on the artwork, occupying the space of the Fondazione with fashion,” Prada told reporters at the end of her show. The new building will officially open during Milan’s design week, held annually in April, and will be used as an exhibition space.
Sitaram Mandir, Gurgaon, Haryana
The Farukhnagar fort, mostly in ruins now, although a few parts have been restored, reflects the magnificence of the Mughal era when it was flourishing. Salt mines in the region made it prosperous and Farrukhnagar flourished because of this until the late 19th century. It was later abandoned during the British Raj in the early 20th century. The Sitaram Mandir in the fort is an ancient temple dedicated to Rama and Sita.
Legend has it that when Rama and Lakshman reached Janakpuri with Sage Vishwamitra, King Janak welcomed them warmly. The next day Rama and Sita chanced upon each other in the palace gardens. Soon, Sita’s swayamvar was being held in which King Janak announced that the man who would successfully string Lord Shiva’s bow, Pinaka, would win Sita’s hand in marriage.
Kings and princes from numerous kingdoms tried unsuccessfully. The bow wouldn’t budge and no man could even lift the bow, leave alone string it.
Then Vishwamitra asked Rama to try his hand at stringing the Pinaka. Rama sought his teacher’s blessings and went forth. He easily lifted the bow and tied the string. As he tested it, the bow broke. The resounding crash that the breaking of the bow caused brought Parashuram to the palace. Furious that Shiva’s bow had been broken, he was eventually pacified when he realised that Rama was an avatar of Vishnu. Sita then garlanded Rama and they got married.
Famous Brihadeeshwara Temple
Thanjavur Brihadeeswara temple is one of the most ancient temples, situated in the city of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, India. Thanjavur named after the legendary asura “Tanjan”, is one of the ancient temples in India. In ancient days, Thanjavur known as “The rice bowl of Tamilnadu,” was an important city to the ancient Cholas.
The most interesting part of this temple is the shadow of the temple, which surprisingly never falls on the ground at noon. The Brihadeshwar Temple is one of the tallest temples in the world and is so designed that the viman does not cast a shadow at noon during any part of the year.
At the entrance of sanctum sanctum, one can see the two idols of Ganesha in the corridor. On taping the two, you will feel the sound traveling through stone in one idol and through metal on the other. The main hall of the temple is said to have been used by the dancers and musicians performing in service of Shiva.
Mahakaleshwar Mandir, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
Located near the Rudra Sagar Lake in the south, in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, this ancient temple has three storeys, dedicated to the Lords Mahakaleshwara, Omkareshwara and Nagachandeshwara. The sacred lingams of the two Gods along with the jyotirlingam of Mahakala are placed inside the temple. Upon entering the temple, one also sees the pious Kunda called ‘Koti Tirtha,’ which is constructed in the sarvatobhadra architectural-style. Near the most prominent Jyotirlingam, one can also catch a holy glimpse of the idols of Lord Ganesha, Kartikeya and Goddess Parvati – Lord Shiva’s family in the Garbhagraha. The main lamp, the ‘Nanda Deepa’ is eternally glowing in this magnificent shrine.
There’s no confirmation on when exactly the temple was constructed. However, as per the Puranas, it’s believed to have been built by Prajapita Brahma. In the olden times, the temple is believed to have been colossal and erected on massive wooden pillars. It did not have shikharas before the Gupta period. Then during the Paramara period, the temple that had seen crises from time to time was rebuilt, in the Bhumija architectural vein. Finally, during the 18th century A.D., the General Srimant Peshwa Baji Rao I and his loyal comrade Srimant Raanojirao Shinde Maharaj invested heavily in the renovation and revamp of the holy temple that stands proud in Ujjain today.
The temple, one of the most-celebrated temples in India, is famous for the sacred presence of ‘jyotirlingam,’ one of the 12, across India. A jyotirlingam has a colossal importance for all Shiva devotees, as it’s a manifestation of the Lord himself. The temple is also said to be one of the ‘Shakti-Peethas,’ believed to be an incarnation of the power of the Goddess Sati Devi.

Have you heard of Hua Hin, Thailand’s original beach-resort town?
Hua Hin – Thailand’s original beach-resort town – fortunately gets one thinking beyond the cliche of just a long classic unwind by the ocean. No doubt, endless meals of fresh-seafood and a spot of kite-surfing will prevail, but there’s much else for those keen to return from the journey, not just relaxed but also enriched. Once you’ve paid homage to the usual traveller hotspots like the Mrigadayavan Summer Palace, for instance, with its connected teak buildings that were built during the reign of Rama VI in 1924, it’s worth setting aside a substantial amount of time for the following experiences.
SHOP TALK AT CICADA WEEKEND MARKET
Hua Hin, like elsewhere in Thailand, is no stranger to the culture of the larger-than-life shopping mall, which never lives too far away from the quirky night market. The Cicada Weekend Market however, deserves special mention amid the night-market pantheon. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The stalls display a distinct emphasis on the small-scale and the home-grown. Here – a glass-blower creating figurines of birds. There an entrepreneur selling every permutation of I-phone case. If you’re game for some local interaction, there’s plenty with which to be engaged. Have a local artist create a caricature of you. Chat with a fellow traveller over a plate of delightfully fresh seafood, or some delicious homemade cake – all in celebration of the niche and the handmade.

Among the floating clouds and pouring trees
In Dhanachuli, days are shorter, rains stay longer and lunches taste better. This small village in Uttarakhand, named after its wealth of grains, has eluded the average traveller. And maybe that’s why it’s a bit too mysterious, fascinating and endearing.
After a one-and-a-half hour journey from the Kathgodam railway station, the white-and-yellow sloped roof of Te Aroha – the lone but gratifying stay option in Dhanachuli – looms high. Run by Delhi-based lawyer couple Asha Barmola and Sumant Batra, the property is an assortment of cottages, gardens, stairways, gravel pathways and an entire vintage museum called Chitrashala.
